| The Why |
Background
Upper Hutt Community Rescue was formed in 1995 out of a community-initiated response to provide the Upper Hutt community with a viable and effective Civil Defence team. The perceived need was recognised by Upper Hutt City no longer having a viable Civil Defence team.
The team is administered by an elected committee and runs as a non-profit organisation.
In 1996 we registered as an Incorporated society. (This was latter transfered to NZVCR in 2001. NZVCR was transfered back to UHCR in 2007.)
The team members are all volunteers, coming from a variety of backgrounds. Training is conducted weekly enhancing skills in First Aid, technical rope work, casualty management and community relations. All team members are required to hold current First Aid and Basic Rescue certificates.
The team currently has qualified CD Rescue Instructors and CPR and Basic Life Support Instructors to ensure training is to recognised standards.
Funding is in the form of money for services by donations, sponsorship, membership fees or fundraising.
The main focus of UHCR is to work in partnership with the Upper Hutt community and assist the professional emergency services and other volunteer agencies when required.
In 2001 the Upper Hutt Community Rescue team became part of the newly formed
New

, a national body encompassing the Upper Hutt Community Rescue methodology. NZVCR is registered as an Incorporated society with "donni" status.
In 2007 NZVCR was merged into UHCR as the usefullness of NZVCR was not being fully realised. UHCR holds and maintains all NZVCR interests.
